Final week of first excavation in progress for the Koobi Fora Research Project.

The field crew at the first excavation

Here are some images taken by Lawrence Nzuve who is at the site of the excavation, showing the progress as they work their way up the slope. Remember they are digging with delicate picks and brushes, and putting this though wire mesh screens and then they search slowly looking for small bone fragments. This is a sequence if images taken over the past few weeks.

They are now approaching the top of the slope and unfortunately despite some fossil bone fragments of other mammals being found in the screen there is nothing yet that can be assosciated with the original specimen.

In any case all the screened dirt has been carried back by vehicle to camp where it will be washed and screened later in the year.
