Aug. 17-24, 2008—Kenya The Fifth Annual Stony Brook Human Evolution Workshop was held in Illeret, located in the northeastern Turkana Basin, from August 17–24, 2008. The workshop was entitled "Prehistory of the Turkana Basin: Opportunities and priorities for future field research." The workshop brought together internationally acclaimed scientists from the fields of paleoanthropology, paleontology, geology, and archaeology at the newly established Turkana Basin Institute research facility in Illeret. This diverse group of scholars included both scientists with decades of research experience in the Turkana Basin as well as scientists currently developing new research programs in the region. The workshop provided a closed-door forum to discuss what is known, unknown and unknowable about the Turkana Basin as well as an opportunity to plan and prioritize future research in the region. |
